When
choosing your new fridge you must be careful not to pick a model
larger than the space that you have allocated for it. If your new fridge
is going to sit in a corner, then you may wish to think about which side the
door should open from, to allow easy access to the interior.
Whether
you choose a built-in or standard model, the fridge will need to
be placed within easy reach of a power socket.
Before
buying your new fridge, decide if regular shelf space is a priority, or if multiple
compartments will be more beneficial to you.
Common
and Special features
Some
brands have chilled compartments where you can keep foods such as
fish and meat at a safe temperature, separate from other foods. A fridge
with a freezer compartment allows you to store already frozen food for a
limited period, the length of which will depend on its star rating. A 4
star rating means that the compartment reaches a minimum temperature below -18ºC,
allowing you to freeze.
You want to consider the refrigerator's finish
-- a stainless steel finish will give your refrigerator a "professional kitchen"
look, which many people like. However, more basic colours are more common, with
white the most common.
Don't
forget to check the warranty -- a good warranty can protect your investment
down the road.
Freezer-on-top
models: these are the most common
(and often most affordable) models freezing capacity
than the ice box provided by a conventional fridge. Manufacturers
have added a number of special features to their refrigerators. Think twice if you need any of these features: Icemakers (internal or through-the-door). Filtered-water dispenser, Gallon-jug
storage on the door, Stainless
steel finish, Some fridges
have an antibacterial coating on the walls and door that helps prevent bacteria
growth, improving the hygiene in your fridge.
Installation
and Warranty tips
When
installing your new fridge, keep it
upright at all times and allow at least 6 hours for the gases inside it. A fridge freezer
is the ideal solution if you're short of floor space but have height to spare,
and need more. Once
you find the model you want, shop around for the best price. Ask about sales,
cash rebates or other money-saving offers. Delivery and/or installation charges
are sometimes added to the cost of the appliance. Ask before you buy.
All
fridges make a certain amount of noise once plugged in. If background noise
bothers you, then look for one that has a lower dB rating. This figure is usually indicated in the
specifications. Check that
the shelves are easy to remove and replace. Look for smooth, easy-to-clean
surfaces with no awkward corners or dirt-trapping crevices, and preferably
concealed condenser coils, i.e. clean backs.
