The thought of being inside a car when it sinks is frightening. Sadly, it sometimes happens. Various experiments and experts’ opinions tell us what’s better to do to escape a sinking car. There are some actions you have to take to become a survivor. Firstly, don’t panic, switch on the interior lights and breathe deeply. Also switch on the car light so that the rescuer sees where you are. Try to get out as soon as possible. Do not try to open the door.
Release your seatbelts, it’s better to exit through a window. If your windows jam, try to break them. Some of the objects you carry in your car may help you break the window. Try anything: elbow the window, kick it out. The best options for escape are side and rear windows. You should remain in front, the front windows are usually bigger and easier to get out of -- for all passengers.
Push children out first, don’t try to save nothing except your life. If your window won’t open, wait the car to fill up with water to equalize the pressure of water inside and outside and then open the door. As the vehicle fills with water, make sure you can still breathe by getting on the back seat where there is an air pocket formed by the air pressure. Fully recline your seat to escape the vehicle easier. Don’t recline the seat if someone is sitting behind you.
Swim to surface as soon as possible, swim forward a light if you don’t know which way to swim. Get medical attention as soon as possible. The less clothing you have on, the easier swimming will be.
If you have sunroof, open it and escape through there, before the water reaches the top of the car. Be careful when breaking the windows, as glass can fly around and you may cut yourself. Don’t wait for help. You’re on your own.
