Istria

Istria is the Largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea. The geographical features of Istria include Učka Mountain which is the highest point in the Ćićarija mountain range, the rivers Dragonja, Mirna, Pazinčica and Raša, and the Lim bay. Istria lies in three countries: Croatia, Slovenia and Italy. The largest portion (89%) Croatian Istria (Hrvatska Istra) is further divided into two counties. The largest portion is Istria County in western Croatia. Important towns in Istria County include Pula, Rovinj, Poreč, Pazin, Umag, etc. Historically, long time Istria entered into Roman Empire and then in the Venetian Republic, thus obtaining on itself a considerable print of the Italian culture: 8% of the population are ethnic Italians and the Italian language and kitchen are widespread. The basic part of Istrian beaches are rocky or concrete platform.

Pula

Pula is the largest city in Istria County, situated at the southern tip of the Istria peninsula, with a population of 62,080 (2006). Like the rest of the region, it is known for its mild climate, tame sea, and unspoiled nature. The city has a long tradition of winemaking, fishing, shipbuilding, and tourism. Pula has also been Istria's administrative center since ancient Roman times.

Dating back to 1 million years B.C., the city got its first name from the Greek – Polai, then the Romans changed it in “Res Publica Polensis”. The city is best known for its many surviving ancient Roman buildings, the most famous of which is its first century amphitheatre, sixth largest in the world and locally known as the Arena. This is one of the best preserved amphitheatres from antiquity and is still in use today during summer film festivals and different concerts. The amphitheatre is opened for tourists in summer. The majority of shops and travel agencies are located the old city round the Arena amphitheatre and central Giardini square.

The natural beauty of Pula's surrounding countryside and turquoise water of the Adriatic has made the city an internationally popular summer vacation destination. The pearl nearby is Brijuni national park visited by numerous world leaders since it was the summer residence of Josip Broz Tito.

The beach zone begins in 3 km to the south from the centre of Pula (it is possible to reach by buses 2 and 7) where there are basic restaurants, discos and hotels.

For productive leisure you may rent skis water, a canoe and equipment for diving. Further to the south some more beaches, including Valkana (with youth discos), Nature Park, Kolumbarica and sandy Debeljak are located.

Rovinj

Rovinj is one of the most luxurious resorts of Adriatic Sea. According to the data of the Tourist Association of the Istrian County, Rovinj is now the second leading destination in terms of the number of realized overnights. Till today it has kept the atmosphere of the medieval fishing port (founded in VII century). The city is located in 40 minutes of driving to the north from Pula. Rovinj is today a treasury of cultural and historical monuments. The basic sight of Istria is the baroque cathedral of St. Euphemia built in 1736. To the south from the old city, where buildings of different architectural epoch have remained (the gothic style, the Renaissance, baroque, the neoclassic), is located the botanical garden Punta Corrente established in 1890. If choosing an excursion, don’t forget to go to one-day cruise from Rovinja to Crveni Otok (The Red Island). The island is 1900 metres long and in 19 century has been transformed into an elegant forest park. Now on the island there is a hotel Istra with a pebbly beach and nudist beaches.

 The gulf of Limska Drag is a fjord of 9 km in length and 600 m in width, one of the most picturesque places in Istria.

Active leisure.

Diving. In Rovine there is the largest in Istria diving centre diver.hr, offering to rent boats and the equipment. The basic sight of the diving is the undermined in 1914 on the Austrian mine, the passenger liner Baron Gautsch lying at depth of 40 metres.

Rock-climbing. About 80 tourist trips, including for beginners, are located in the former Venetian stone quarry Zlatni Rat, cost of a campaign with the guide – 180 kuna from the person.

Poreč

Poreč is a known tourist centre of Croatia in northwest Istria (1 hour of driving from Pula), annually receiving various national awards in the tourism field. The extension of the resort zone is 37 km.

Poreč is almost 2,000 years old, and is set around a harbour protected from the sea by the small island of Sveti Nikola (St. Nicholas). The Old city, in which the Roman roadway has remained, is well-known for uncountable quantity of shops and restaurants. The Euphrasian Basilica, rebuilt in the 6th century under the Byzantine Empire and bishop Euphrasius, is the most important historical site in Poreč and the major architectural monument.

Within July and August in Poreche is held the Annale – the oldest Croatian art exhibition. Concerts of popular music usually are held on Thursdays on Freedom Square (Trg Slobode).

The largest centre of active tourism – Plava Laguna (tennis, basketball, volleyball, surfing, rowing, sailing) is 5 km far from the centre of. The largest centre of diving is at the Galijot hotel.
