1. Have a vision!
Most business sites are on the desire to make money. Now. No matter what, probably to make money on the conveyor belt. It's normal. After all, for that between people in business. What they do not understand is that if you have a vision, if you do not "focus" business, you will not ever get to evolve, to make more money.
I recently worked for a web design company, owned by two partners. One of them had a clear vision of business, the other just wanted to do 100 sites a day to "get" how much more money. At one point, the business partner who had vision and he gave made another web design agency. Now guess which of the two business sites still work? Right.
2. Do not do more, do less
I learned this from 37signals. Their products are appreciated and recognized because they are a variant of "lite" and easy to use other competing products.
Take for example a web design company, again: Does anyone know how many "companies" are in the world of web design? I do not know, but there are many. How many successful? Those who chose not to provide all possible services (software, hosting, SEO, branding, webdevelopment, design, marketing, promotion, and on and on ...) but to focus on a sub-domain (such as branding, for example).
3. Pay Attention to what's in, not out!
Why businesses (mostly) not progressing ever, and sometimes even disappear? Because trying to imitate the competition. Because it directs attention to the outside, not inside.
When you try to be something you're not, you lose. Try to look at what you and develop that "something". Track and develop the company's products. Notice consumer needs. Improve services. Thank your customers. Will it pay out.
4. Transparency is the key
Nobody is perfect (actually, God is ... But That's Another Story:)), therefore nothing is perfect. What is the most common and biggest mistake you can make? Trying to hide the fact that the products / services / your business are not perfect. Try to be transparent. Do not hide mistakes or problems.
5. Be honest!
Last but not least ... be honest! Sooner or later, customers always realize if you are not honest with them. If you are sincere, they will trust you in business, in your products and services.
